Lahey Hospital and Medical Center

Burlington, Massachusetts

A facility worth the wait.

For Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, community mattered most. After waiting decades to realize this project, being able to serve their community effectively was the main goal.

This new ED comes at a critical time. Lahey’s Emergency Department in Burlington is treating more and more patients every day from throughout northeastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, and the patients we care for tend to have serious illnesses and injuries.

This ED is the only Level II Trauma Center in the area, meaning it has all the essential specialties, equipment and trained personnel to treat complex traumatic injuries. What was needed was a world‐class facility to match Lahey’s world‐class caliber of care.

The current ED space was built to serve 17,000 patients a year, but that number has now grown to more than 40,000. The new facility, four times the size of the existing emergency room, will accommodate 50,000 patient visits a year.

In addition to the new ED, the project provides 47,300 sf for MEP support, core, and shell space by excavating down to the existing facility’s first floor level and creating a grade level elevation on one side. It is planned as a future Radiation Oncology Space and expanded shipping and receiving area. A new 6,600 sf mechanical room on the second floor roof supports first and second floor development.
